Adventures on the South East Coast

As I mentioned in my last post, the Ginge and I have just got back from a week in Kent and East Sussex; two of the prettiest counties I have ever visited. Neither of us had ever been before, but loved it so much that we are already hoping to go back. We stayed in a beautiful, homely cottage right in the middle of Rye - a beautiful medieval town of windy cobbled streets and rickety old houses, which made us imagine we were pirates! Whilst there, we were utterly spoiled for choice with things to do, but settled on a few of our most loved pursuits; cycling along country lanes, browsing through antique shops, eating lots of fresh fish, drinking lovely wine and nourishing our inner geeks by dressing up in museums, riding on steam railways and visiting nature reserves and old English gardens. I couldn't possibly pick my favourite day, but my highlights include the day we spent at Camber Sands, playing beach cricket - I am trying to perfect leg-spin bowling so that I can join Andy's cricket team - and our day in Dungeness; a strangely beautiful place with Victorian lighthouses, WW2 pumping stations and a giant nuclear power station. Apparently it's a bit of a 'marmite' place; people either love it or hate it. We absolutely loved it, particularly because the dreary weather made it so darkly atmospheric. We spent a lovely, if very damp day with my good friend Lucy, moseying around the very Treacle-friendly shops in Tunbridge Wells (I was impressively restrained) and the stunning, Italian-style gardens at Hever Castle. We also had a very decadent afternoon at the Chapel Down vineyard at Tenterden, sampling and buying far too many wines. All-in-all, it was a wonderful holiday and we both came away feeling much more like our usual selves again. Just what the doctor (and almost-doctor) ordered.

Home on the Range

Blimey, it's been ages! I have been computer-free for the past couple of weeks, whilst I took some lovely time to go on holiday. The Ginge and I spent a blissful week in Sussex - more to follow - and I am now at home with my family in sunny Wiltshire. I am so happy to be back with team Treacle, especially as I have hardly been able to spend any time at home this year. Life is very rose-tinted in the aftermath of my hand-in and I feel utterly spoiled by the simplest of things. I have been munching homegrown red currants, cooking tasty garden meals, getting my hair cut (for the first time in months, thank god), browsing through antique shops in Frome, lunching at the Glove Factory (wishing I could be an artist so that I could own a studio there), being silly with my sister, finding new places to drink coffee and moseying around the gorgeous Walcot and Broad Streets in Bath (more here). I love Sheffield, but it is wonderful to be at home.

All Done and Dusted

Thank goodness for that. I won't go into the gory details, but let's just say that I am beyond relieved that it is all over. It has been tough, but as you can see, I'm pretty damn chuffed with what I have achieved! Thank you to all of you for your support, particularly to those of you who left me such lovely messages of encouragement - they meant so much to me and came just at the right time. Thank you also to my lovely friends and family for all of your love, patience and gorgeous pressies! What more could a girl want than a printed and bound dissertation, a bacteria-themed cupcake, some beautiful wool all the way from Harris, flowers on the table and a bottle of bubbly? Actually, I would quite like my Ginge back - he is currently in Edinburgh at a conference and I am missing him terribly - but that is not the point. You have all been amazing and I am a very lucky girl indeed!

Thank you! x

Just Keep Swimming, Just Keep Swimming

My dissertation is due to be taken to the printers on Wednesday, at which point I will never have to do anything to it again and will be able to get back to writing more interesting things for you lovely people. Things to look forward to: family-Treacle day out for my sister's Graduation and all the delightful treats I have planned for when it is all over. In the meantime...
